Business Selling Tips

“What is your best pig in the offering?” or “Which pigs would you consider the top five in this sale?”

These are some of the most common questions that breeders receive when talking to buyers about their online sale offering. However, the answers to these questions are not as simple as one might think. Providing the seller with some basic information about your goals, budget and expectations can lead to a much better answer and ultimately provide you with the best pig for your specific needs.

Jesse Heimer, owner of Heimer Hampshires, shares his insight on what information the seller needs to help you make the best buying decision.

Target Show

The very first thing that Jesse likes to know from a potential buyer is where the pig will be shown. Let the seller know when you plan to show the animal, or if you are buying for multiple shows, which show is a priority. It is also important to inform the seller of what you normally feed for your target show so that expectations are clear on both sides and they can help you find a hog that meets your goals.

 “All pigs that are the same age and weight are not necessarily created equal. Many buyers forget to factor in the genetics, maturity and the way a pig will grow. Sellers usually have a good idea of how a pig is going to grow and if it will work for your target show,” Jesse said.

Budget

It is beneficial for you to be up front about your budget. Being honest about price range allows the seller to better guide you in your buying decision.

“It is not as important for me to know the exact price point from a buyer, but I do like to know if I am working within a price range. This allows me to recommend the pigs that are best suited for their needs within a comfortable price point,” stated Jesse.

Concerns

Not every buyer will have concerns that need to be addressed. However, if past experiences have created doubts in your mind, don’t hesitate to ask any questions that will alleviate those concerns.

 “It is important if you have concerns to voice them, more specifically concerns about the pigs and what you can or can’t see in the picture. I actually get substantially more questions and concerns about delivery versus questions about the pigs in the offering. Unless you live in a remote area or have had issues in the past, I’d prefer to work on delivery after the sale. ” Heimer said.

Keep in mind that selling season is the busiest time of year for breeders and plan accordingly. If you feel more comfortable communicating with your seller by a phone call, Jesse recommends making the call several days prior to the sale as that will allow the seller more time to speak with you and answer questions. Once sale day arrives, many breeders prefer text messaging for questions due to volume of calls and texts received. Voicemails become inefficient and text messages provide a reference after the sale, whereas a phone call cannot.

 

“Text messages allow me to help more potential buyers in a short amount of time, and more efficiently manage those who come to the farm to look and those who rely solely on my buying advice,” says Heimer
