Breeder Central

Briefly introduce yourself:
My name is Troy Lowdermilk owner of Lowdermilk Showpigs.   I am married to Stacy Lowdermilk, and we have two children, Sydney (6) and Chase (4).  Our farm consists of approximately 25 sows with 80 percent of our herd being comprised of Spots with a handful of crosses, Berks, Durocs and Yorks.  I grew up on a 125 sow farrow to finish operation where we raised both commercial swine as well as breeding stock. We have a major passion for the spot breed and raising purebred livestock.

First, tell us what you feel separates your business from other operations in the show pig business?
We feel like our honesty and integrity are the things that separate our business from the rest. We feel like this speaks for itself in the way our hogs have breed on, generated and fed for people. If there is a problem we stand behind it 100 percent.

What websites, apps or tools can’t you live without? Why?
We use all the showpig websites. I am a showpig junkie.  If I didn’t have those I don’t know how I would pass the day.

How do you keep your to-do list?
In my head

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can’t you live without and why?  None.

What do you listen to while you work?
I like to listen to a whole lot of everything.  Predominantly country but I honestly like about anything.

What everyday thing are you better at than everyone else? What’s your secret?
I feel like I am really good at seeing the negatives in our own stock and not being barn blind, which has allowed us to make great strides forward.

What are you currently reading?
I am not a reader.

How do you recharge?
I recharge by going to hog shows and taking vacations with my family.

What is your favorite and least-favorite chore?
Favorite chore is feeding in the evenings and admiring the stock. Least favorite chore has to be cleaning.

How long does it take you to picture, sort and write a description for ONLY one pig in an online sale?
Approximately 30-45 min

Describe your ideal customer.
An ideal customer is dedicated to their project or business and wants the absolute best, but also one that has the understanding that sometimes things don’t work out and is willing to hang in there with you through thick and thin.

Fill in the blank: I’d love to see ________ answer these same questions.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
When we first started we didn’t have anything fancy as far as truck and trailer and one of the breeders that first got us started told me don’t worry about what you show up in just worry about the stock you have inside the trailer. A lot of not very good livestock comes to shows in really expensive rigs.
