Duroc pig--What do you all think?

Postby kfoskey » Fri Aug 12, 2011 9:59 pm

This is my daughter's March Duroc. Her first show will be the 27th of this month. What do you all think about her? This is her first year showing. She's showing in the breeding gilt division.

Let me know if this link doesn't work. This is my first try on this site.

Looking pretty good maybe needs a little more fill to her rib section . Should be able to get this done close to show ring time! Good luck to the little one

I don't think there is a lot we can tell from these pictures. I'll be the first one to say that taking great pictures of pigs is very difficult! I for one have no talent or patience for it. To get shots that truly represent what the pig looks like live is extremely difficult. The only shot you have there from which I can really deduce anything is the rear view. From that view I would say she has decent ham expression. She doesn't show a lot of base width from behind but could be how she is standing. I think she needs more time on feed to "mass up". Other than that I can't tell much about her structure or soundness from those pics. I expect she is a respectable specimen but it would be hard to say whether she is a class-winner or a bottom-feeder without seeing more. I would say push her hard and hope for the best!

Good luck with her.

Seing that you are planning on showing her as a breeding gilt and not a market hog, my comments will be based on a Breeding gilt emphasis.

Darin points out that the photos make if difficult to really evaluate her and I agree. The 1st shot of her has her head down and she is twisting. So it's not a good shot to really discuss. The rear views are really where my comments will come from. She's not the heaviest structured gilt and as Darin said, she looks to get a little narrow at the ground. She has plenty of muscle but by looking at the photos, I would start to question her structure. He toe size is pretty small and she looks to be a little tight in her hip. I see some swelling in her hock joints which would lead me to think that she might have a little dificulty striding free and easy from behind.

Again, these comments come from some pretty suspect photos, so hopefully I'm wrong.

Good luck with her, and make shure not to put any Paylean in her, I don't think she can handle it.

Thanks for the comments. I'm new to all this, so any tips or advice is greatly appreciated. Maybe I'll try to get some better pics. It was thundering a little when I was taking these pics and she was a little nervous acting, so it was hard to get her to be still for a shot.

Duroc pig--What do you all think?

Wright090: Who died and left you boss? Really!!! Tell me how constructive was that comment. You should be ashamed.... Let the family and kid enjoy a wonderful experience and an awesome outcome. An apology would be appropriate right about now.

Don't sweat it mtbkmom. Everybody has their opinion. Apparently she is better than the pictures on here show or at least she was to this particular judge.
Wright090,
You're welcome to come see her whenever you'd like. I'll let you be the judge. She'll be in many more shows, so I'll be sure to let you know. Let me know when you're coming so I can have her ready. :D
