linco 300, dex and banamine?

Postby MelC » Tue Dec 18, 2012 2:26 pm

Over and over I see the combination of these drugs recommended on this website. I have requested dexamethasone from our local vet a couple of times for a gilt that has been limping off and on for a month. Her back leg was injured while loading in the trailer. The first time I asked for it, the vet wouldn't give it to me. She said to just use banamine. Today she agreed to give me one shot of dex. She said I could use it with linco 300 but not with banamine.

Any thoughts on this?? Why is this vet so apprehensive about me using this combination of medicine?

Why don't you ask her?

There are some practitioners that are concerned with the immune suppression effect that it has and use it very cautiously. It is also extra label and some practitioners prefer to use as little extra label stuff as possible.

When I was going to school they beat us over the head about the side effects of corticosteroids like dexamethasone. Some of us are harder headed than others I guess. :)

I do not know why you would not use an NSAID like banamine and a corticosteroid like dexamethasone concurrently.

The last thing is dexamethasone will induce cattle and sheep at any stage of pregnancy. Swine medicine isn't taught much and there are practitioners through no fault of their own that do not know that it has no such side effect in pigs.
Do you want to know who you are? Don't ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.

Thanks HogDoc. I gave her the shot, along with linco and banamine last night. I know this regimen is normally given for three days. I only had the one shot of dex, so I guess for the next two days I will just give her the linco and banamine.

Should I call a different vet to see about getting two more shots of dex?

What is the main difference between dex and banamine? Why would you stear to one or the other?

Dex is a corticosteroid and can lower their immunity making them more susceptible to other viruses or bacteria. Banamine is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) and won't be as apt to lower immunity.
