Breeder Central

Briefly introduce yourself:
My name is Chris Fischbacher, and I’m 32 years old. Ilive in Wildorado, Texas. I have been married for 7 years to my wife, Steelee, and we have two kids, Mattlee and Case. I started raising pigs when I was a kid in 4-H, and I have been doing it full-time since 2011. We currently have about 50 sows and a dozen boars. We primarily raise crosses and Yorks, but we also have a few Spots, Durocs and Berks.

Location: Wildorado, Texas

One word that best describes how you work: Hard

Current Mobile Device: iPhone 6

Current Computer: Windows Desktop

Current Camera: Nikon

First, tell us what you feel separates your business from other operations in the show pig business?
That’s a hard question, and I’m farrowing sows while I’m writing this, so I think I’ll just skip it.

What websites, apps or tools can’t you live without? Why?
I’m pretty simple: Showpig.com, thepigplanet.com, and pistolsfiringblog.com. I love the Notes app. It has eliminated 90 yellow notebooks scattered around the house, which my wife loves. I couldn’t live without my phone either.

How do you keep your to-do list?
In my head

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can’t you live without and why?
I really don’t use any other gadgets.

What do you listen to while you work?
Nothing while I work, but when driving I have gotten hooked on podcasts. They are pretty addictive. For anyone out there interested, I would recommend Serial and Planet Money. F.Y.I., they are free.

What everyday thing are you better at than everyone else? What’s your secret?
People tell me that I have a good memory. My wife is the only one who has ever disagreed with this.

What are you currently reading?
Nothing at the moment. I have recently read Killing Lincoln and Killing Kennedy and enjoyed both of those.

 How do you recharge?
I wish I knew how. Like so many show pig breeders, my mind is pretty much 24-7 pigs. I love spending any time I have with the kids. I do enjoy college football in the fall; it’s a chance to enjoy something else.

What is your favorite and least-favorite chore?
Checking heats and breeding sows has got to be my favorite. My least favorite is cleaning pens, obviously.

How long does it take you to picture, sort and write a description for ONLY one pig in an online sale?
First of all, I would say that I’m not the person to get advice from on this. On average we spend 30-45 minutes per pig; it just depends on how much cursing is involved. I’m always telling myself that I am going to take the time to work with the pigs and get them tame before I picture them, but I always run out of time. Hopefully, I will in the future. As far as write-ups go, I do those pretty fast, as I don’t have a whole lot to say.

Describe your ideal customer.
Eager to buy and hesitant to complain. Ha!. In all seriousness, we’ve been blessed with an outstanding set of young people and families to work with over the years.

Fill in the blank: I’d love to see _________ answer these same questions.
